Hey everybody, aren’t you excited about 4.8? Oh! my goodness WordPress 4.8 has rolled out and if you haven’t updated your WordPress core yet, absolutely do that today because you are missing out on some incredible new features that they’ve added and it’s kind of a no-brainer. These should have been here all along. I’m super excited to see the upgrades.
Alright y’all, here’s the game plan now. If you have not updated yet to 4.8, I want you to be sure that you have a backup in place before you click that update button, right? I want you to be sure you have a game plan on how to get to that backup just in case anything is wonky or perhaps breaks with any plugins that you’re running or maybe even your scene might not necessarily like WordPress 4.8, so you want to be sure that you have some sort of backup in place. If you’re wondering how to do that, I have a video for you. I’ll put the link to that in the description box below so that you can check it out and see how to backup your website before you make any major updates like this.
Alright moving forward y’all, check out these cool things that they’ve done for us. Oh! my word. Blowing my mind on these widgets. These are things that truly should have been there all along. How frustrating is it for you to have to add an image to your widget bar and you have an owner code to do that. Not anymore. What about adding a video widget inside of your sidebar or your footer? You can do it now. An audio widget, and finally, this it’s just brilliant, an updated text widget. So let’s see exactly what I’m talking about. If we wanted to have something inside of our page area here…Check this out. Now there’s this default. Displays an image. Drag, drop it over and let’s put it at the top so we can see it right away. If you needed a title, you can add one right and then just add an image. That’s brilliantly simple y’all. That’s all you guys do. Add the image, click ‘add the image’. There it is. You can replace the image. Click ‘Save’ and now on the front side of your website…Now you’ve easily added an image. If you didn’t need the title, of course, you just take that area off, click ‘Save’ and again, now you’ve got your beautiful image sitting there. I hope your mind is blown right now because I used to be very difficult to view. You used to actually have to know nerd code in order to get that to sit there. Not anymore. In WordPress 4.8 the same thing comes into play whenever you’re looking at a video. You can add in the video there. Same idea there. Add the video. The text, here you go. Visual or nerd code mode, either way. You now have a WYSIWYG sitting here. Just fantastic to see and about dang time. How exciting is that y’all. Just fantastic.
Overall, you can come in here and grab any of these. Drag-and-drop them over the other things they’ve done. They’ve certainly added more options in the developer mode. If you scroll down here they’ve got all sorts of extra bells and whistles for those of you like me, who are a little bit more advanced nerdy, you’ve got to check these out. There’s some really cool stuff going on in 4.8 and you can also see inside of your dashboard now, anything going on in your area for WordCamp events. So definitely take a look at those options inside of your dashboard. Super exciting update. I hope you love it.
Give me your feedback in the description box below and check me out next Wednesday. We’re going to be talking about ways to shorten your URLs for a better user experience. I’ll see y’all next WordPress Wednesday. Bye, y’all.
