Weekend Workshop—WordPress Themes

Build a WordPress theme from scratch.

This is an ADVANCED COURSE: Ever wanted to learn how to build custom WordPress themes from scratch? In this course, you’ll learn how to take a regular HTML site and make it into a WordPress theme.

What you will learn

  • Template hierarchy
  • Simple PHP functions
  • Custom post types
  • Custom taxonomies
  • How to take an HTML page and make it into a theme
  • Theme basics
  • Which plugins can help you
  • Basics of WordPress themes
+ This workshop is:

  • 60% instruction and 40% project oriented. This means that you won’t just be taking notes. You’ll be actually working on your own project in class!
  • a fast way to gain expert knowledge of WordPress themes.
  • an easy way to learn PHP for WordPress.
  • a practical way of learning in an instructor-led, hands-on environment.
  • a fun way to network with other WordPress enthusiasts. Our class size will be kept to no more than 12 to better ensure your success
+ This workshop is NOT:

  • a way to learn WordPress editing or setup.
  • a time to learn HTML—we expect you to have a working knowledge already.
  • a “learn how to use your computer” course.
  • a time to learn design or Photoshop skills.
  • a time to get a one-on-one consultation about your website’s look or content. We work in a group setting and will be giving general best practices instruction. You will be able to ask questions about your project, but the instructors will not give any one person their full attention the entire time out of fairness to everyone attending.
+ What do I need for the class?

You’ll need a good attention span! This workshop runs on Saturday, 8 am – 5 pm (one hour lunch break), and Sunday, 1 pm – 5 pm (a few 10 min breaks).

You’ll need to complete the pre-class assignment (which will be sent to you automatically upon registration), and bring your laptop (Mac or PC) with you. Be sure this laptop has Wi-Fi capability, and be sure to pack your charger. Of course, bring something to take notes with, and come prepared to have fun and learn a lot!
